Community: Rosa Scott School (RSS) is located in Madison, a suburb north of Jackson. RSS, a part of the Madison County School District, is a consolidated county school drawing students from Flora and Madison. The area's convenient location, strong school system, high property values and easy access to Jackson have made south Madison County one of the most rapidly developing communities within the United States, according to the 2000 U.S. Census. Accreditation: Based on superior test scores, Rosa Scott School has earned High Performing Status by the Mississippi Accountability System. In addition, RSS met AYP. Also, Rosa Scott was recognized by BusinessWeek magazine as the Top Academic-Performing High School in Mississippi during the 2008-09 school year. Description of School: As the ninth-grade campus of Madison Central High School, Rosa Scott School has a total enrollment of 440 students. In addition to a strong college-preparatory curriculum, Rosa Scott offers the following extracurricular activities: six sports, band, choir, dance, JROTC and over 20 clubs. Rosa Scott students also have the opportunity to participate in at least 13 Varsity Sports through Madison Central. Grading System: All grades are recorded numerically. The letter grade equivalents are as follows: A= 90-100, B=80-89, C=70-79, D=65-69, F = Below 65.
Scheduling: Since 1998-99, an 8-period, alternating-day, block-scheduling format has been used on the high-school level in the Madison County School District. Students attend four classes each day with each class being attended for an hour and thirty-four minutes.
Units Required for Graduation: Each student entering Rosa Scott in Fall 2012 with an anticipated graduation date of May 2016 from Madison Central shall have earned a passing grade on the following state-mandated subject area tests: Algebra I, Biology I, English II Multiple Choice and Writing, and U.S. History. Also, students shall have earned a minimum of 24 carnegie units distributed as follows: Four (4) units in English: Four (4) units in Math to specifically include Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II: Four (4) units in Science, one of which must be Biology I, one of which must be a physical science; Four (4) units in Social Studies to specifically include Mississippi Studies, World Geography, World History, U.S. History, Economics and U.S. Government; One (1) unit in Fine Arts; One (1) unit in STEM; One half (1/2) credit in Health as well as a half (1/2) credit of PE; Five (5) units of elective courses. Accelerated Classes: Rosa Scott School offers Accelerated English I. Upon attending Madison Central in grades 10-12, students will be offered Accelerated and Advanced Placement Courses in five subject areas. Grade Averaging and Ranking: Class rank and grade point average for students graduating from Madison Central include all graded courses from 9th through 12th grades. Numerical grades earned by the student are weighted prior to being recorded on the transcript. Weighted averages are determined by multiplying semester grades using the following scales: 1.10 x Grade – Advanced Placement Courses 1.05 x Grade – Advanced Courses (as specified below) Actual Grade – All remaining courses The only Advanced Course at Rosa Scott to be weighted at 1.05 is Accelerated English I. Staff: Fifty percent of Rosa Scott teachers have attained AA or greater certification from the Mississippi Department of Education, which is typically granted through the earning of at least a Masters Degree. 2008-09 – All 292 Biology I students earned a passing score on the SATP. Rosa Scott's mean for Biology I was 432, which is 75.6 points above the state average. Also, with a 97.9% passing rate, the Algebra I SATP average score was 660.5, which is a six-point improvement from the previous year. The state passing rate percentage was 70.1. Almost 99% of 2008-09 RSS students were promoted to 10th grade.
2009-2010 - All 380 Biology I students passed the SATP exam with an average score of 432.8, which is 73.6 points above the state average. The Algebra I test was taken by 274 students with a pass rate of 95.6 and an average score of 659.6. The state passing average for Algebra I was 79.6 with an average score of 654.5. 2010-2011 - It was another successful year for Rosa Scott with 325 students taking the Algebra I SATP exam scoring an average of 660 and having a pass rate of 95.1. Biology I was not counted in the state accountability model due to a new assessment being implemented.
Madison Central Statistics: Ninety-two percent (92%) of the 2009 Madison Central graduates have enrolled in college, withfifty-seven percent (57%) of total graduates enrolled in a four-year college. Students averaged a score of 21.9 during the 2008-09 ACT test administration while the state composite average is 18.7. Also, for 2009-10, MCHS has 13 National Merit Semifinalists, which is the most of any public or private high school in the state of Mississippi. Updated: 4/19/2009 |
